What Should Traditional Russian Brides Know?

Published by Lera Cupidonova at 11:25 am under Women

Wedding ceremonies are different in every country you visit. The customs in Egypt won’t be the same as the ones in China. This is an accepted truth no matter where you go so it is easy to understand why some people may want to learn how things may be different for them. Here are some customs Russian brides need to know for traditions sake.

There is no best man or maid of honor in a traditional Russian wedding. These people are called by the Russian word “svideteli” or witnesses instead. The wedding party itself can last for as little as two days but sometimes goes for even longer!

Some things in traditional Russian marriages are the same as in American ones. One of these things is the time it takes to put the wedding together. A Russian wedding can take between one and six months. The marriage registration takes place in a “Zags” as opposed to our American courthouses.

A bride who is seeking a traditional Russian wedding should look forward to gifts of bread and salt. These edible blessings come from both parents. They are considered to be a symbol of health, prosperity, and longevity.

When given these edible gifts the bride and groom both take a bite. This is again a tradition that is somewhat kept in weddings in the United States, except instead of fresh baked bread we use cake. Whoever takes the largest bite of this piece is supposed to be the head of the family.

Much like within the United States traditional Russian weddings have toasts. A toast is when a close friend or family member of either the bride or groom stands up before everyone and shares a word or two of blessing an encouragement. Everyone drinks afterwards.

In Russian tradition once a toast is made the glasses are thrown on the floor. If the glasses break when they hit the ground it is believed to be good luck. However, if the shards draw blood this may be considered a bad omen, so, just like in marriage you have to know when to put force, how much, and you have to take careful aim before you toss anything!

Krazha Nevesty means “stealing the bride”. This is just what you think it would be. It is one of the most interesting customs within the traditional Russian wedding. The bride can be snatched up if the groom is not paying close attention to her!

During the wedding celebrations friends and family members of the groom will often set up elaborate schemes in order to snatch his beloved. He has to stay on his toes! If he loses his bride he is then forced to pay a ransom for her return.

Being one of these Russian brides can be just as nerve wrecking as being any other kind of bride. There are tons of things you have to remember, all the while taking one of the biggest steps towards your future. Still, it’s important to remember that on your wedding day you’re supposed to be happy. Smile, you’re getting married!
